The Service of Holy Baptism

Through Baptism we are made "members of Christ's Body, the Church, and inheritors of the kingdom of God" (Book of Common Prayer, 1979).  This sacrament is celebrated within a Sunday Eucharist at either the 9:00 or 10:45 AM worship service in order that the Christian community of St. John’s can acknowledge its responsibility alongside the parents and godparents, as together we commit ourselves to God to help nurture those who are being baptized.  To that end, baptisms are performed:

A) For any person over the age of twelve seeking baptism;

B) For any child of a person who is an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church; or

C)  For any grandchild or relative of any active member of the parish as long as the parents of the child to be baptized are members of a Christian church where they live.

The baptismal candidate or the candidates parents are asked (and godparents are highly encouraged) to contact the church office and schedule a meeting with one of the clergy regarding Holy Baptism.  This discussion, which usually lasts between an hour to and hour and a half, will focus on the meaning of Holy Baptism and the promises and responsibilities that are involved.  The candidate, parents, and godparents will also be taken through a rehearsal of this special worship service in the church.

Candidates or parents who are interested in the sacrament of Holy Baptism are encouraged to contact the church office at 860-767-8095 or at office@stjohnsessex.org.
